Formal Written Grievance
The correct way to document your work complaint.
Last updated 21 February 2026
Overview
To invoke the protections of the ACAS Code of Practice, your complaint must be clearly communicated as a formal grievance in writing.
If an employer ignores a formal grievance, they risk an uplift in tribunal compensation against them.
What you can do
- Write 'Formal Grievance' in the subject line or heading.
- Reference exactly what happened, when, and how you want it resolved.
